Trot Nixon: Death Dealer

I am very amused by any article that starts off with a paragraph like this:
"Trot Nixon, I've had enough. I give up. You win. Your quest to completely destroy the hopes and dreams of fantasy owners is complete. Apparently, I underestimated your ability to scuttle the best-laid plans of fantasy owners. Apparently, three injury-riddled, ineffective seasons wasn't enough for fantasy owners to have soured on your once-lauded potential. Oh no, Mr. Nixon, you weren't satisfied with simply wasting what looked to be shaping up as a solid career. Nosireebob, you had to go and sign a free agent contract with the Indians, taking two potential fantasy sleepers down with you."
The sleepers the author refers to are Ryan Garko and Shin-Soo Choo, who must now split time with our hero. In fact, there's currently seven players on the Indians (Nixon, Choo, Garko, Casey Blake, David Dellucci, Jason Michaels, and Franklin Gutierrez) all of whom will have to share left, right and first. Good luck trying to estimate those splits. The good people at Roto Authority tried, and they barely got out alive.

vinco vici victum

After 6 straight losses, it was good to finally get win, 85-75 over our new found whipping boys the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. Those guys must really hate us by now.

This will in all likelihood entrench Ish/Harvey/LD/Skeen/Fear the Viss as our starting line-up, which I think is for the best. Just limit Drum's minutes for Pete's sake.

LD apparently had the oop to end all oops right before halftime. I've yet to see it since I'm limited to listening to the games over yahoo broadcast, but the guys on radio about had a heart attack when it happened. Surely some intrepid Deacon fan can upload that vid to YouTube soon. When I see, I'll add it to mein bloggen.

Update: Just saw it as sportscenter's #2 play of the day, and it was indeed sick. No youtube yet...

Update: found a picture of LD's other dunk, which was "only" #7 on sportscenter...

Yes, he made that.

Meet the New Lappy

My beloved r51 sadly passed away Monday afternoon around 1pm. The screen had already been acting up for the past few days, freezing up completely and then not turning on after the restart. This time it was permanent. I took it by the ITS peeps and they told me the video card or something died. Rather then pay to repair a computer I already considered replacing before, I rushed to Best Buy to look at their selection, which was literally zero. See, Windows Vista rolls in a week and stores understandably stopped ordering PCs that would soon be obsolete. Thankfully, CompUSA still had some left, so I snapped up the Toshiba Satellite A105-S4344 they had on display.

So far I don't have anything to complain about. It came at a relatively good price and has plenty of RAM and GB and all the other acronyms I don't understand. Although I do miss my red keyboard nipple. As soon as those buggers at ITS extract my class notes and case briefs from my late r51's hardware, things should be back to normal.

Cut That Meat!

I'm not a Colts fan, but I'm definitely happy for Peyton. He deserves to play in a Super Bowl and that last drive of his was a thing of beauty. Plus, I think we're all tired of Brady and the Patriots winning everything. Also of note is that there's never been a black head coach in the Super Bowl and now, thanks to Lovie Smith and Tony Dungy, we'll have two.

They're saying moooooooo-vers.

Go Indians

L&L hero Trot Nixon has finally landed with a new team, signing a one-year, $3 million deal with the Cleveland Indians. Some loser named Joe Inglett already has Trot's usual number 7, so he'll be sporting number 33 for the Tribe. I'm already thinking about getting one of these, but we'll see.

This all means that the Indians have leap-frogged the Devil Rays and the Twins to become my second favorite AL-team, and perhaps passing the Cardinals as my 2nd favorite overall team. Boston will of course forever be #1, at least until the whole team tests positive for steroids or joins the Communist Party.

He'll be joining fellow ex-Red Soc Keith Foulke.

In other news, Boston still hasn't technically signed JD Drew and I just bought my first fantasy baseball preview guide. What? It's less than a month until pitchers and catchers report!

8am - 10am Live Blog

  • Wait, Jack went dark!? Gasp!
  • A terrorist leader negotiating directly with the President. Yeah, that’d happen.
  • Jack sure picked up one hell of a handy cell phone from that random car he, uh... jacked. GPS system, three-way calling…
  • I just realized Morris is the Russian mob boss from The Boondock Saints. And by “realized” I mean saw on IMDB.
  • The terrorist guy totally went into storage container #24. Hee hee.
  • I’m already bored with the ACHHHmed subplot. Someone kill him.
  • “Get me Jack Bauer. Immediately.” At least Wayne’s smart enough to do that.
  • So the nuke’s with Fayed, I guess the White House is safe. LA, prolly not so much.
  • I like how the Mom getting into an SUV gets a guitar riff.
  • Milo and Chloe? That makes three CTU co-workers Chloe’s dated in the past year and a half. Not bad for someone with negative social skills.
  • You know, Jack’s left hand seems to be healing rapidly. Or maybe it was his right that was all effed up.
  • I’m also very very bored with the Sandra Palmer subplot. More Jack, less annoying lawyers.
  • Yes! Shoot ACHHHHmed! Death to bad acting!
  • Ohhh crap, Curtis is pissed. (Pause) Nooooo!!! Black Jack down, Black Jack down!!! Poor guy, I’ll miss him. At least ACHHHmed died too.
  • Umm, is Jack gonna shoot himself? It would be kind of the only way Jack could die (or at least stay dead) …
  • Yep, that’s a mushroom cloud. I think that juuuust might get Jack back in the fighting mood.

Reactions to Hours 1 and 2 (plus: real world explosions!)

  • Only Jack Bauer could shower, shave an entire beard, and give himself a haircut in less than 10 minutes.
  • Just when you think Jack's killed in every way possible, he breaks out the Jackula move.
  • Chloe is awesome, and her boyfriend is pretty cool too. I love how he's the constant charmer and she's, well... Chloe.
  • Was I the only one who thought: hey, the first presidential facial hair since Taft!
  • I cannot buy Kumar / Taj / ACHHHH-med as a terrorist. I mean... he's in stoner comedies for crying out loud (and Superman Returns).
  • Apparently "EVERYTHING IS GOING TO CHANGE" Monday night. I'm going with a low-grade nuke to the White House, and that's how Logan gets back involved, as an emergency temporary back-up president. Whatever it is, Chloe better survive.
  • Everything I have heard from those who've seen hours 3 and 4 is that they'll be absolutely amazing. So strap in and enjoy the ride.

    Rapid Fire: Deacons Going Hollywood?

Filmmaker eyes Abbate family story. Can I play the part of Riley Skinner?

David Beckham. $250 million for 5 years. $50 million a year. $1 million a week. Has a single player ever been paid more than the worth of the entire league?

Widener's internet server finally took yahoo.com off their blacklist. I had been unable to move players on my fantasy team because I couldn't sign into my yahoo account. The nightmare is over.

Barnes & Noble (my home away from home away from home) has a great deal going on right now: buy one TV box set and get a second one FREE. Yesterday I bought Seasons 1 and 2 of Scrubs for $45. Deal ends January 31st.

I remember reading an article in SI several years ago where a writer thought Mark McGwire would be the first unanimous selection into the Hall of Fame. Didn't quite work out.

I think I'll see Children of Men tomorrow afternoon. I gots a three-day weekend anyway.

    Beep... beep... beep... beep...

So how sweet is it to be a Gator fan right now?

I have yet to hear anyone mention this, so let me be the unofficial first: the University of Florida is a few minutes away from being the reigning champion in both football and men's basketball.

Has this ever happened before? Is it possible for Gator fans to comprehend how fortunate they are? Has the Tennessee government declared a state-wide suicide watch?

    So many questions...

Oh yeah. I'm back in Delaware. Joy.

The Day After: Still and Always Proud to be a Deacon

Maybe its me. Wake goes 11-3, but 0-2 in the games I attend. Just go ahead and blame me for the Orange Bowl loss. I should have taken my cue from the Virginia Tech game. My bad.

Still, it goes without saying that Wake Forest winning the ACC Championship and earning a trip to the Orange Bowl is a remarkable achievement. We've come along way. It was only a few years ago that I considered going to the Aloha or Seattle Bowl to be a really big deal. Now I would be positively disappointed with a similar result next season. Hopefully I will go to school closer to home in the fall and be able to see our now-successful team actually win a game.

As an aside, the non-football highlight of the game was the three fighter planes scorching right above the stadium after the National Anthem. Any of my words would fall woefully short of capturing how awe-inspiring that sight was, but suffice it to say that the only thing anyone could think to say was "Wow."
